NEWS COPY - WITH PICTURES A demob-happy monk borrowed his friend’s sports car to celebrate and crashed it - into a TREE. Thapanat Chaiyasut, 31, was just one day from leaving the strict monkhood when he took a pal’s orange Nissan Silvia S15 for a spin yesterday (Tue). But after leaving the driveway he accelerated away before minutes later clipping a tree and spinning out of control in Suphanburi, central Thailand. Thapanat - still wearing orange robes when he was found in the driver’s seat - suffered a broken arm and cuts to his leg while passenger Boonyarit Puengchareon, 19, was unconscious. Police said that Thapanat and his passenger had both been taken to hospital where they were stable after the ‘'Fast and Furious’' style crash. Police captain Mr. Kornvit Meedee from the Samshook district station said the monk had been ‘’speed testing’’ the vehicle. He said: ‘’Police arrived at the scene with ambulance staff from the Samshook hospital and we found the car crashed with Phra Thapanat inside. ‘’The sports car had been modified. It hit a tree at the side of the road and crashed. The front window was smashed and a front wheel had blown out.'' Pol Cpt Meedee said officers and the ambulance team immediately took the injured men to the hospital. The driver was not arrested or charged with any offences. He added: ''They investigated and found out that Pra Tapanatchaisut's friends drove the car to see him and Pra Tapanatchaisut borrowed the car to drive on the road to test how fast the car is. ''Pra Tapanatchaisut drove as fast as he can until he hit the tree very hard. Pra Tapanatchaisut was supposed to leave the temple the next day on 26th April but the accident happened just a day before.’' A spokesman for the Smerkan Supanburi foundation said the believed the car was a Nissan Silvia S15 and its bodywork been modified. They added: ‘’It was too fast for the monk to handle. The car is like the same one from the Fast and Furious movies.'' ENDS
